What to Expect from Your Pre-Wedding Shoot in Tokyo
So you've decided to do a pre-wedding shoot in Tokyo. Great choice.
Genuinely great choice.
But if you've never done one before, it's normal to have a small pile
of questions rattling around in your head. What do we wear? Where
exactly do we go? Do we just... stand there? What if we're awkward
on camera?
(You won't be awkward. That's literally my job to handle. But let's
get to all of it.)
What even is a pre-wedding shoot?
It's a dedicated photo session — separate from your wedding day —
where you and your partner get beautifully photographed somewhere
meaningful. For couples visiting Tokyo, it's a chance to capture
stunning images in one of the world's most photogenic cities, without
the time pressure of an actual wedding day bearing down on you.
Think of it less like a formal photoshoot and more like a really fun
date in Tokyo, except someone keeps making you look amazing the whole
time.
How far ahead should we book?
Earlier than you think. Cherry blossom season (late March–April) and
autumn foliage (November) fill up months in advance. A safe rule of
thumb: 2–3 months ahead for standard sessions, 4–6 months if you have
a specific season in mind. If you want sakura specifically and you're
reading this in February, stop reading and go contact us right now.
I'll wait.
What should we wear?
Two options, both great:
Western outfits: Elegant but comfortable is the goal. You'll be
walking around Tokyo for a few hours, so "stylish but can't actually
move" is not ideal. Solid colors and subtle textures photograph
beautifully. Avoid loud patterns or the kind of matching couples
outfits that make you look like you're about to board a cruise ship
together.
Kimono or traditional Japanese attire: Hugely popular with visiting
couples, and for good reason — there's nothing quite like it. Our
team includes kimono experts who handle the entire dressing process.
You just show up. We do the rest.
What actually happens on the day?
With our Signature Pre-Wedding packages, a typical session looks
something like this:
- We meet at the location (or at our studio if kimono dressing is
involved)
- Our dedicated assistant handles logistics, lighting reflectors,
and timing
- I direct you naturally throughout — you will never be left standing
there wondering what to do with your hands
- We move through one to three locations depending on your package
- Somewhere in the middle you'll forget there's a camera at all,
which is exactly the goal.
With our Portrait Sessions it's even more relaxed — just you, me,
and a great location for 30 to 90 minutes.
When do we get the photos?
Edited photos land in your online gallery within 2–3 weeks. Video
packages are delivered within 2 days, social-media-ready vertical
format. Rush same-day delivery is available if you need it.
Do you speak English?
Fluently. I grew up between Japan and Hawaii, and our entire team is
comfortable in both English and Japanese. A lot of our clients have
never been to Tokyo before and don't speak a word of Japanese. That's
completely fine — honestly it makes the adventure better.
What's the "Just Show Up" thing about?
It means exactly what it sounds like. You don't need to research
locations, source kimono, figure out timing, or stress about
logistics. We've done this hundreds of times. We've got it.
Your one job is to show up, be yourselves, and have a good time.
We handle everything else.

Hopefully that answers most of the questions spinning around in your
head. If you've got more, just ask — I genuinely enjoy talking about
this stuff. Or if you're ready to see what a session actually costs,
